The original purpose is to maintain privacy. Today, many of the hotels are (former) riads. Essaouira: We stayed at the Riad Palais des Remparts and the highlight here was definitely the huge roof terrace on three levels and the view of the sea: the breakfast / dinner area (dinner can be pre-ordered); the sun deck area with 6 sunbeds for sunbathing and the chill-out area with several couches, covered and perfect for relaxing in between. In addition, you can also use the hotel's own hammam at the riad - with advance reservation - and you can also be pampered with massages directly at the riad. The rooms are beautifully furnished. The breakfast is local and extensive. The clientele ranges from young to old.
